William "Billy" Hayes, Jr.

July 31, 1952 — September 9, 2018

William “Billy” F. Hayes, Jr., age 66, of Appleton, WI, passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton.

Billy was born on July 31, 1952 in Milwaukee, WI, the son of William F. Hayes, Sr. and Shirley J. (Swanson) Hayes. Billy was a former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ripon, WI.

Billy, the beloved son of William F. and Shirley Swanson Hayes, will be deeply missed. His six sisters declared him to be the best Brother they could ever have had and their husbands agreed. He was the favorite Uncle of his many nephews and nieces, a cherished cousin, a friend to many and loved by his wonderful caregivers.

Billy, who was developmentally disabled from birth, was a truly gifted and unique soul. A lover of babies, young children, family and animals, Billy had a marvelous sense of humor and a surprising sixth sense that allowed him to know things that he had never been told. He loved rock and roll and country music, knew the words and could sing most any tune in a beautiful voice. Billy, a righteous defender of good, found his calling and preferred to wear a wardrobe inspired by the vintage western television shows and movies he loved to watch.

During his many years living in Appleton, Bill deeply touched many people. With his beautiful character and incredibly diverse inventory of interests and passions, Bill was able to connect with and impact hundreds of people.  He helped many to become better siblings, parents, friends and caregivers.  His charm, songs, and passions will live on in the stories he gave to all of us who had the joy of spending time with him.

Billy is survived by his six sisters: Cynthia (Richard) Diemer of Ripon, WI, Mary (Dan Hansen) Hayes of Bay View, WI, Melanie (Paul) Sims of Madison, WI, Stacie (Bruce) Woboril of Plover, WI, Sarah (Andy) Jewell of St. Paul, MN, and Elizabeth (David Wallinga) Hayes also of St. Paul, MN; an aunt, Joyce Hayes of Green Lake, WI; thirteen nieces and nephews; eight great-nieces and great-nephews; numerous cousins; and all his friends at Pnuma Group Home in Appleton. He was preceded in death by his parents William Sr. and Shirley Hayes.

Visitation for Billy will be from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 530 Ruth Street, Green Lake, WI, 54941.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Billy will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Green Lake, with Father Michelu (Mike) Ragola officiating. Private family interment will take place at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Town of Ripon. Memorials in his name may be directed to the Ripon Education Foundation, Inc. (Ripon Public School District) – Shirley J. Hayes Scholarship, PO Box 395, Ripon, WI 54971 or the Fox Valley Humane Association that is located at N115 Two Mile Road Appleton, WI  54914.

Billy's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to John Erck as well as all the current and past staff at the Pnuma Group Home for their wonderful care and friendship to Billy over the years.
