The Reverend Robert James Crawford Brown II, 84, of Ripon, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2017, at Ripon Medical Center in Ripon, WI.
Although Father Brown, the second son of John Edgar Brown and Sibylla (Hoffmann) Brown, was born in Shippensburg, PA on September 8, 1932, he spent his childhood and most of his teenage years in Westwood, a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, OH, graduated from Riverside (University) High School in Milwaukee, WI, and graduated from Ripon College in 1954. He then went to Nashotah House Theological Seminary (Anglican), Nashotah, WI, from which he graduated in 1957. Father Brown was ordained a Deacon in 1956 and a Priest in 1957. For 31 years, Father Brown served St. Peters Church in Ripon as well as St. Marys Chapel in Wautoma. He served as Chaplain of the Episcopal Campus Rectory at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, the Curate of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Milwaukee, WI, Instructor of the New Testament and Greek at Nashotah House, Vicar of Grace Episcopal Church in Galena, IL, Vicar of St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Shullsburg, WI, and Vicar of Trinity Episcopal Church in Platteville, WI. Father Brown was named to The Confraternity of The Blessed Sacrament Honorary Canon of St. Pauls Cathedral, Fond du Lac in 1993. He also taught Greek and Latin classes at Ripon College. He enjoyed fly-fishing and tying flies and was a member of Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fishers.
Father Brown is survived by his sister Katherine (Richard) Wolfe of Visalia, CA, nephew David Wolfe of Visalia, CA, niece Alicia (Vincent) Grant and grandnephew Vincent A. Grant IV of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, and godchildren, Christopher Shaw of Ripon, WI, and Jennifer Affleck of Philadelphia, PA. He is preceded in death by an infant brother and his parents.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017, 1:30 p.m., at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 217 Houston St., Ripon, WI, 54971. Bishop Matthew Gunter, assisted by Father Ed Smith and Father John Cell, will preside at the mass. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
