Peter Chobanian

February 20, 1931 — April 4, 2021

Peter Chobanian, age 90, of Ripon, WI, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021 at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, WI.

Peter was born on February 20, 1931 in Racine, WI, the son of Haroutune and Catherine (Sorjian) Chobanian. On June 21, 1958, he married Nazaly Andekian. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Peter was devoted to his family. Peter and Nazaly celebrated over 57 years of marriage, planting deep roots in the Ripon community, where they made their home and raised their children. Peter was a librarian at Ripon College from 1962 until 1994. He was an avid and lifelong student of the humanities, studying history, literature, and the arts. From Italian operas to Broadway showtunes, Peter loved to sing, and his solos could often be heard above the roar of his lawn mower. His love of literature spanned from Shakespeare to Tolstoy, and he penned and published his own short stories and poetry. Peter was a poet, on paper and in life, gifted with words, especially those of love, which he often repeated, “is all that matters."

Peter is survived by his children, Michael (Mariam) Chobanian of Racine, WI, and Elizabeth (Brett) Weum of Monona, WI; and grandchildren, Grigor, Jake, Alivia and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Haroutune and Catherine Chobanian; his wife, Nazaly Chobanian; a granddaughter, Alexia; and his sister, Mary (Chobanian) Merzian.

A private family graveside service and interment for Peter will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Garden of the Cross Cemetery, Ripon, WI, with Pastor Mike Holba officiating. Memorials may be directed in Peter’s name to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2211 North Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL, 60707.
