Nolan Wallenfang

May 4, 1934 — November 1, 2021

Nolan Gene Wallenfang of Green Lake died peacefully at home on Monday, November 1, 2021. He was 87 years old. Nolan was born in Dale, Wisconsin on May 4, 1934 to Francis and Velda (Sommer) Wallenfang. He attended the Wisconsin State Teachers College at UW – Whitewater where he met the love of his life, Carletta “Letty” Cheney. Before graduating from college, he was recruited by the U.S. Army Security Agency. He enlisted in 1956 and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan. On September 7, 1958 he married Carletta in Tokyo. Upon returning to the U.S. he began his teaching career in Bear Creek, Wisconsin but soon moved to Green Lake, an area that both he and Letty loved. He received a M.Ed. from UW-Oshkosh and taught Business Education in Green Lake for 28 years, retiring in 1991. Hundreds of students will remember him as the man brave enough to annually plan and chaperone the senior class trip and also for the happy sound of his whistling through the hallways of the school. In the early years of living in Green Lake, Nolan and Letty fell in love with an abandoned farm on the north edge of town and were eventually able to purchase it. With his wife and family, he restored the property on North Street and opened Wallenfangs of Green Lake in 1975. Nolan was dedicated to the future of Green Lake and the well-being of its people; he served on many boards and committees throughout the years including the Plan Commission and the Health and Human Services board. He was a lifelong learner, fueling his enjoyment of travel abroad with Carletta and hunting and fishing adventures near and far with family and friends. Nolan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carletta and five children, Kimi (Bret Sandleback), Robin, Nolan, Ryan (Katie Sullivan) and Kevin (Laura). He is further survived by 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Clyde and Jerome and two sisters, Joyce and Priscilla. The family will celebrate a mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Reverend Father John Silva officiating. Mass will be followed by a final salute with military honors. Burial at Dartford Cemetery in Green Lake.
