Marcella "Sally" M. Smith

Marcella “Sally” Marie Smith, born in Spencer, WI on November 8, 1918 to Sabina (Hoops) and Herman Mellenthin was received by the Lord on Monday, May 27, 2024 at the age of 105.

Well done my good and faithful servant…enter into the joy of the Lord. How blessed we were to have her for so long. She was strong, faithful, gave and received love in abundance, and kept her sense of humor and feisty spirit until the end.

Sally was baptized and confirmed at Lutheran Church in Spencer, and attended Lutheran School and Spencer High School. She never liked to cook, but sacrificed for 6 kids who insisted on eating and in her later years her appetite was great, probably because she didn’t have to cook. She served others, working as a nursing assistant and surgical technician at Columbus Hospital and later at Ripon Hospital for 29 years, and was very dedicated to her work.

Traveling with friends gave her great joy and memories, and as the years passed she was content with being blessed with another day. The recliner, an animal to pet, a tv remote to flick nonstop, lots of chocolate and she was happy. Through good times and bad, love and loss, she was an example of strength, faith, resilience and forgiveness.

Sally is survived by her children, Joann (John) Strandell, LeRoy Smith, and Howard Smith. She has loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and great-great-great grandchildren that survive her, along with her nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Lloyd D. Smith. She later married Lester Zimmerman who also preceded her in death. Also awaiting her arrival are her children, Marjorie Szopinski, Lloyd Smith, Jr., and Jerrold Smith; sisters, Lucille Klubertanz, Bernice McClhatten, Doris Schultz; and brother, Norbert Mellenthin; her parents; and many other relatives and friends who have gone before her. We hope there is chocolate in heaven.

Sally’s physical presence and purpose on this earth is complete, and now she is rewarded with God’s everlasting peace. Gratitude is extended to the SSM Hospice team and friends and family who were so supportive and caring.

Visitation for Sally will be held from 9:30 until 11:00 am on Monday, June 17, 2024 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 500 Mayparty Dr., Ripon, WI 54971.

A memorial service for Sally will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 17, 2024 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Ripon, with Pastor Bryan Fritsch officiating. Inurnment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
