Larson “Lars” Stenbro Clement, age 82, of Ripon, WI, passed away on January 2, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison with his loving family by his side.
Lars was born on August 6, 1940, son of Arthur and Ragnhild (Larson) Clement, in Mauston, WI. After graduating from Mauston High School, he joined the Navy. Lars furthered his education at UW Lacrosse, graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Physical Education. On August 8, 1964 he married Mary Wattawa in Reedsville, WI. He was a Physical Education teacher his whole career, spending 32 years with the Ripon School District.
Lars was known for his sense of humor and love of practical jokes; he even had the gift of laughter up until the moment of his passing. He was an avid fisherman, who could be found on water in both the warm and cold months. He was the proud coach of the 2 time State Champion, Ripon American Legion Baseball Team. A lifelong Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan, whose competitive spirit kept him playing sheepshead for many hours weekly and he delighted in beating his family in countless games of cribbage. Lars was a member of the American Legion, Retired Teacher’s Association, lifelong member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, past President of the Church Council and sang in the church choir.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Clement of Ripon, WI; children and grandchildren, Heidi Kay, Timothy, Kayla and Andrew Nichols of Atlanta, GA, Melissa Ann, Tom, Benjamin and Jake Byland of Bentonville, AR, and Robert Arthur, Jennifer, Alexis, Riley and Reid Clement of Seymour, WI; sister-in-laws, Carole Clement and Donna Gagner and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Worstell and brother, Rev. Arthur Clement.
Visitation for Lars will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 307 Mt. Zion Dr., Ripon, WI 54971.
A memorial service for Lars will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. Inurnment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ripon. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Ripon Brown-Parfitt American Legion Post #43, 113 E. Fond du Lac St., Ripon, WI 54971.
