Kim Ownby

August 22, 1952 — February 23, 2022

Kim Howard Ownby, 69, of Ripon, WI, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at his home surrounded by his wife and dog, Louie.

Kim was born August 22, 1952, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Robert Ownby and Jeanne Kenyon Ownby. He attended school in Winthrop, Iowa, graduating from East Buchanan High School in 1970. Following graduation Kim attended the University of Northern Iowa where he met his future wife Miriam Gray.
They were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, IA, on August 21, 1971.

In 1975, the couple, along with their two young daughters, moved to Bemidji, MN. Kim continued to attend college while working as an insurance agent for the Prudential company. After graduating from Bemidji State University with a degree in Biology and Chemistry he decided to continue his education at Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA. He graduated with a master’s degree in medical science and completed the qualifications to proudly hold the title of Physician Assistant (PA-C).

Kim, Miriam and family moved to Markesan, WI, in 1985, where Kim had the opportunity to practice in a small rural family clinic. He loved it! He was also able to practice in other clinics in the area as well as the ER at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Appleton.

Being a grandfather was one of Kim’s greatest joys. From teaching shooting and guitar, wood working and going 4 wheeling together, his devotion to his seven grandchildren was unparalleled. He modeled the kind of behavior and values he felt the kids would need as they grew into their own lives.

Anyone who knew Kim well knew he enjoyed life in many ways. Throughout the years he tried many hobbies and ventures. He enjoyed piloting his ultra-light plane as well as bicycling. On his 50th and 55th birthdays he celebrated by riding 100 miles. He loved hunting with both guns and bows. He excelled in shooting and was active in S.A.S.S. (Single Action Shooting Society), an international organization. He had so much fun with that group.

He also loved cars and motorcycles and road trips. Through the years he owned more vehicles than can be imagined.

He loved to brew beer and for a few years he experimented with several recipes. When he decided to begin a hobby, he went all out.

Kim was also an excellent woodworker. He built exquisite furniture that is proudly displayed throughout the house. He also made and gave items to friends and family.

Traveling was another great joy. Kim and Miriam had the pleasure of traveling to many unique places and met so many wonderful friends along the way.

One of his greatest passions was singing and playing guitar with the Federated Church’s Praise Band. This brought him so much joy and deeper connection to his faith.

Survivors include Miriam, his wife of 51 years. Daughters, Meredith Ownby of Madison, WI, and Robin Wolzenburg (Mark) of Fitchburg, WI. Grandchildren, Andrew Voss of Fitchburg, WI, Ethan Voss of Fond du Lac, Estelle and Finn Wolzenburg of Oshkosh, Samaria Ownby, Isaac Harrison and Grace Harvey of Madison. Sister-in-law, Marilyn Timmons (Dave) and numerous nieces and nephews.
