Harriet Dowdy

Harriet Dowdy, age 92, of Ripon, passed away on Friday, August 27, 2010, at Barrett House in Ripon, WI.

Harriet was born on March 16, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of
N. Boyd and Editha (Brown) Brodhead. She graduated from University of Rochester, NY in 1939. On October 24, 1940, Harriet married Rev. R. Edward Dowdy in Stamford, Ct. She was always an educator, working with early childhood Christian education and later as a public school teacher, having received her MS in Education at Bank Street College in 1970. After her husband’s death, she became a Special Service Worker under American Baptist Board of International Ministries, serving in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) and under the Board of National Ministries later taught at Alderson Broaddus College in West Virginia where she received an honorary LHD in 1991. Harriet taught ESL at the International Baptist Lay Academy in Budapest, Hungary and also at Sammuk Christian Academy in Thailand. In various locations where she lived, she was active as a Girl Scout Leader and in local school events. After moving to Ripon, Harriet continued her work as a literacy teacher in Ripon and as summer advisor in a Multi-cultural Student program at the American Baptist Assembly/Green Lake Conference Center. Most recently she served as volunteer docent at the Chapel Car Grace at the Conference Center from 1995 – 2007. She was particularly involved with the ministry of her church and also involved with AAUW and with Habitat for Humanity in Ripon.

Survivors include daughters, Heidi (Russell) Hirschy of Markesan, WI and Joyce (Walter) Utroske of Union Mills, IN; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister and a brother.

Visitation for Harriet Dowdy will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010, from 12:30 – 2:00 pm at Federated Church of Green Lake, 489 Scott St. Green Lake, WI 54941.

Memorial Service for Harriet Dowdy will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 2:00 pm at Federated Church in Green Lake, WI. Reverend Karen Gygax Rodriguez will officiate. Inurnment will take place in Roanoke, VA at a later date. Memorials may be given to Alderson-Broaddus College Divisional Impact Scholarship Program, Admissions Office, 101 College Hill Dr. Box 2003 Philippi, WV 26416 or Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, 3400 Brook Rd. Richmond, VA 23227 or to a Hospice program in your local community.
