Fredrick Elmo Sorenson, age 71, of Ripon, WI and formerly of La Crosse, WI and Hokah, MN, passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2022, after a courageous battle with Covid Pneumonia.
Fred was born August 31, 1950, in La Crosse, WI, the son of Elmo and Virginia (Tomsicek) Sorenson. He graduated from Aquinas High School in La Crosse, WI in 1968. Fred served our country in the United States Navy. He married Rose Nelson in 1976 and together they raised their three children in Hokah, Minnesota. They divorced in 2000. Fred later married Judith Liston Toland and she preceded him in death in 2011. Fred married Janet Mildebrandt in Ripon, Wisconsin on October 27, 2018.
Fred worked as a laborer and forklift driver at the G. Heileman Brewery in La Crosse, Wisconsin for over 30 years until their closure. He retired as a Wastewater Operator at Saputo Cheese in Waupun, Wisconsin.
Fred was well known for his love of racing pigeons while living in Hokah and enjoyed Ham radio with his N0HRN call sign. Fred moved to the Ripon area upon the closing of the brewery and after earning his Associate’s Degree in Agriculture from WWTC in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Fred could often be seen trapshooting at the gun club and was currently part of the Friday cleaning crew. Fred could often be seen at Village Grounds or Mug’s for coffee. He attended mass regularly at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Green Lake and St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Ripon, Wisconsin. He made many friends while living in the Ripon area. He was a member of the Berlin Conservation Club and Princeton Gun Club. Fred enjoyed fishing and camping in his younger days with his brother, Paul. He also enjoyed watching the Packers and listening to the Brewers game on the radio.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Sorenson of Ripon, WI; his children, Mary (Adrian) Wruck of Coon Valley, WI, Peter Elmo Sorenson of La Crosse, WI and Angela (Joseph) Hoeppner of Menomonee Falls, WI; six grandchildren, Henry, Maxwell and Lucy Wruck all of Coon Valley, WI, Sara, Noah and Lila Hoeppner all of Menomonee Falls, WI; sister, Sylvia Stephens of Waunakee, WI; niece, Jennifer (Christopher) Roy and their children Harrison and Joseph of De Forest, WI; two aunts, Betty Sorenson and Theresa Tomsicek; and many cousins.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Elmo and Virginia Sorenson, brother Paul Sorenson, brother-in-law William Stephens and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A Funeral Mass for Fred will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, January 21, 2022 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 530 Ruth St., Green Lake, WI 54941. Inurnment will take place at Crucifixion Catholic Cemetery in La Crescent, MN at a later date.
