Ethel Gatzke, age 104, of Ripon, WI, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2013, at Wolverton Glen in Ripon.
Ethel was born on April 11, 1908, in Pine River, WI, the daughter of Halsey and Edith (Hodge) Sprague. She graduated from Berlin High School in 1925, and went on to graduate from Green Lake County Normal in 1926. Ethel then taught school for six years at the Bush and Bluffton Schools, both one-room country schools in Green Lake County. On August 6, 1932, Ethel married Clarence M. Gatzke. He preceded her in death in 1969. Once Ethel got married, the school district forbid her from teaching. She became a homemaker and mother and later worked for the Advertisers Manufacturing Company in Ripon. Ethel was an excellent cook and seamstress. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, bowling and was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs. Ethel was a charter member of Pilgrim Rebekah Lodge No. 195, a member of the Ripon Science Club and the Berlin High School Alumni Association.
Survivors include two granddaughters, Beth Revello of Ripon, WI and Heidi (Paul) Semenske of Green Lake, WI; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Revello of Ripon, WI, Adrian Semenske of Ripon, WI and Angelica Stahl of Ripon, WI and many special friends. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Sam Holmes; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Kurt Knopf; infant brother, Carl LeRoy Sprague and infant twin grandsons, Jay and Jeffrey Holmes.
Visitation for Ethel Gatzke will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, from 10 11:00 am at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, 515 Mayparty Dr., Ripon, WI 54971.
Funeral service for Ethel Gatzke will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at 11:00 am at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon. Pastor Paul Yoder will officiate. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ripon. A memorial has been established for Berlin High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 276, Berlin, WI 54923.
