Darwin Schleicher

February 1, 1920 — July 30, 2018

Darwin D. Schleicher, age 98, of Ripon, WI, passed away on July 30, 2018 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, WI.

Darwin was born on February 1, 1920 in Waushara County, WI, the son of George (1878-1939) and Mary (Bade) (1886-1965) Schleicher. He was married for 75 years to the love of his life, Alice (Engel) Schleicher (1920-2017) on April 26, 1942.

He was a devout member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church all of his adult life where he was active in the Men's Club, the dart ball team, and the finance committee.

Darwin is a 1938 graduate of Ripon High School. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942-1945 as an airplane mechanic in the Pacific theater. After his war time service, he worked at Kroger's Grocery in Ripon from 1946-1954. Following brief employments selling Studebakers for Bloedels, and selling insurance for the Aid Association for Lutherans, he worked for Speed Queen in Ripon for 27 years. After retirement from Speed Queen in 1982, he joined his wife, Alice, on the staff of the National Forensic League as a part time helper.

In 1950, while living with his mother at 632 State St., he removed the standing barn next door to build a home for his young family. The Schleicher's lived at 121 Cedar St. for 66 years until he and his wife moved to Maplecrest Manor. In addition to nurturing his house, his hobby was cars-old or new-which he could repair and keep clean as well as, or better than, the best of car mechanics or car washes. He was an avid reader, a fan of the Brewers and Packers, never swore, never drank alcohol, and he was a great role model for his children and grandchildren demonstrating an omnipresent honesty, a hard work ethic, and an impressive sense of self-discipline. In sum, he lived his life with priority to his God and his family, above self.

Darwin is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Chris) Hollerup of Ripon, WI; two sons, Philip Schleicher of Aurora, CO and Donald (Jieyeon) Schleicher of Mahomet, IL; five grandchildren, Cherise (Daniel) Ward of Spokane, WA, Angela (Ed) Cook of St. Paul, MN, Stephanie Schleicher of Aurora, CO, and David and Alice Schleicher, both of Mahomet, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; grandson, Tym Paul Hollerup; his parents, George and Mary (Bade) Schleicher; his brother, Lloyd; and sisters, Delores Shippee and Evelyn Splitt.
