Charles Van Scyoc

December 21, 1925 — July 4, 2018

Charles V. Van Scyoc, age 92, of Green Lake, WI, passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at Kindred Hearts in Green Lake.

Charles was born on December 21, 1925 in Downs, Kansas, the son of Leon and Lola (Veal) Van Scyoc. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Emporia, KS, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served his Country honorably and nobly during World War II as a Corporal in the Second Marine Division, seeing action in the Battle of Okinawa and Guadalcanal. He was among the first troops to occupy Nagasaki a month after World War II ended. Charles was also a Sergeant in the Korean War, serving as an Amphibious Tractor operator.

After his service in World War II, he returned home to Emporia and attended Emporia Teachers College, where he met Hannah Jean Pattie. In 1948 he married Hannah in Williamsburg, KS, and they enjoyed over 56 years and raising a family together before Hannah passed away in 2004. Charles was a skilled glazier, working with glass for most of his professional life. He also enjoyed a stint with Hannah as a motel owner in Colorado.

Charles and Hannah enjoyed traveling together, entertaining family and friends, and especially loved celebrating holidays and decorating for Christmas (often in July). He shared his love of bulldogs and pugs with his family, but he loved all dogs and spoiled his canine visitors with treats. He was especially proud of his children and grandchildren, going to as many of their events as he could get to. He loved gardening, sharing his home-grown tomatoes with friends, and feeding and watching birds.

Charles shared with his family that he planned to “go out with a bang,” and passed away during the fireworks show on July 4th. Charles is survived by his two children, Leslie (John) McGarry of Cambria, CA and Matthew (Rebecca) Van Scyoc of Green Lake, WI; grandchildren Matthew (Kelsey), Christopher, and Katie Van Scyoc; and two great-granddogs, Annie and Bentley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Lola Van Scyoc; and his wife, Hannah.

A Prayer Service will be held at 12:30 pm on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, 515 Mayparty Dr., Ripon, WI, with Father Dale Grubba officiating. Inurnment and Final Salute with Military Funeral Honors will take place on August 13 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA. Memorials in Charles' name may be directed to Kindred Hearts, 850 Sunnyside Road, Green Lake, WI, 54941.
